Do you have a well water system in your home? If so, you’re lucky enough to have access to some of the cleanest, most natural water available. In order for you to have access to this quality of water all of the time, you should be properly maintaining the well water system you have in place.
✓ Your well water system should be inspected, serviced, and tested for bacteria annually. However, additional inspections should be completed anytime there’s a change in the taste, odor, or appearance of the water.
✓ Always use a licensed plumbing company with certified technicians when constructing, repairing, or servicing a well water system.
✓ Avoid placing anything near your well — including hazardous materials like paint, paint thinners, pesticides, oil, fertilizer, etc.
✓ Inspect the well cover regularly to make sure it’s still in good condition. A well cover that is damaged should be replaced immediately.
✓ Be extra careful when landscaping around the well with lawn mowers and weed whackers. Damaging the wall of the well system can create sanitary problems within the well.
✓ Always keep well records in a safe and secure place in case they need to be referenced to during your next service or repair. These records should include the construction report, repair invoices, annual service tests, as well as any other non-annual bacteria tests.
✓ Keep in mind that the lifespan of a well water system is usually 20 years. If yours is close to (or older than) this age, contact your local plumber to talk about constructing a new system and decommissioning the old one.
